Water Levels at Tring Reservoirs
I have been keeping records of water levels at Tring Reservoirs since 2001 and British Waterways have given me further information going back to 1998. The water level charts are based on all this information.
I have also kept records of rainfall since Year 2000. The rainfall charts are based on my records only.
The first chart shows a direct comparison of the water level readings for all four reservoirs for 2005
The chart below shows how each reservoir varied against its average in 2005.
In this next chart I am trying to give an indication of trend and it shows the average fill level against year for each reservoir.
Note that figures for Marsworth only start in 2001. This is because the figures I got from British Waterways for 1998-2000 are not directly comparable. British Waterways do not record levels above zero (ie above the overflow) for any of the reservoirs, they just record positives as zero. That is fine for their purposes such as knowing how much water is available for the canals, but not so useful for knowing how wet the reedbed is, for example.
Startops and Tringford do not reach zero (not in my experience anyway).
Wilstone does reach positive figures, but only up to about +0.2m and usually only for a few weeks each year. This has not significantly affected the figures.
Marsworth, on the other hand, is normally above zero. This is because the sluice there is usually boarded so that a typical level is +0.4m.
The next chart shows Total Rainfall for each year.
